Hometown Heroes Standouts at MMP Event

(May 6, 2007) -- The Comp Cams/TCI Heads Up Series event at Montgomery
MotorSports Park on Saturday (5/5) featured some surprising winners, some
favorites coming through in the clutch, and a lot of hometown heroes. The
large field competed in five heads-up classes as well as Super Pro and
Footbrake Bracket competitions.
Three Montgomery area racers took wins Saturday: Buddy Baggett of
Montgomery continued his domination of the 6.0 heads up class with a win
over Scott Olin of Cottondale, AL. Baggett had a nearly perfect reaction
time of .002 and steered his 1967 Chevy Nova to a 6.082 second run at 99.91
miles per hour for the win. Olin ran a 6.143 at 117.09 miles per hour.
John Cooper of Jasper, AL and Stacy Parker of Houston, AL were the
semi-finalists.

Montgomery racing veteran Harley Miller notched a win in the Super Pro class
with his "Break Out" Camaro. Miller defeated Doug Roberts of Greensboro, AL
in the finals. Miller ran a 5.834 on his 5.83 dial at 116.41 miles per
hour. Roberts ran a 5.395 at 125.17 for the breakout loss on his 5.40
dial-in.
Wetumpka racer Cole Cousins took the 7.0 class win with the '68 Camaro his
father Doug used to race. Cousins ran a 7.023 at 92.33 miles per hour to
defeat Jerome Terry of Trinity, AL who ran a 7.022 but couldn't make up a
starting line deficit. Huntsville, AL racer Steve Cothren was the
lone-semi-finalist.
Drag racing legend Toby Barnes of Newnan, Georgia took the Footbrake title
in a win over James Garrett of McCalla, AL. Barnes ran a 7.520 on a 7.48
second dial at 88.94 miles per hour in his Pontiac for the win. Garrett
dialed a 6.34 but ran one thousandth of a second under that for the breakout
loss.

The 8.0 heads -up winner was Chattanooga, Tennessee racer Michael Garner who
denied Toby Barnes his attempt at a two-peat. Jimmy Cantrell of New Market,
AL was the semi-finalist.
Mark Johnson of Ozark, AL won the 4.70 class final over Blake Wilder of
Marietta, Georgia. Johnson drove his 1988 Thunderbird to a 4.763 1/8 blast
at 147.68 miles per hour. Wilder ran a better time, 4.716 at 149.52 miles
per hour but couldn't overcome a major hole shot by Johnson. The next event
in the Comp Cams/TCI Heads Up Series will be this coming weekend at
Huntsville Dragway.

This week at Montgomery MotorSports Park means Test and Tune on Friday
night. Gates will open at 6pm with the 1/4 mile track open to any licensed
driver of a car or motorcycle from 7pm - 11:30pm for only $15.
