(June 12, 2006) -- 25-year old racer Kevin Pruett of Millbrook (AL)
practically owned Montgomery MotorSports Park last year; he won so often
that other racers called it "Pruett MotorSports Park." This year, though,
Pruett has struggled.
Kevin
made up for it with a vengeance Saturday night (610) as he placed both his
entries in the Pro finals of the first day of the MMP Capital City Spring
Bracket Nationals. The dominating performance was especially sweet because
his father and mentor, Kenny, was there to watch. "Mr. Kenny" is still
suffering the effects of blood clots which nearly took his life earlier this
year. Wearing an oxygen mask and unable to stand with Kevin, Mr. Pruett was
obviously pleased and moved by his son's win. Despite having two of the
three semi-final entries, Kevin agreed to a split to give some extra money
to the other semi-finalist, J.C. Perry of Mobile. "You can't be greedy,"
said Mr. Pruett in the middle of the post-race celebration.
The Footbrake winner Saturday night was Wilbur Baxley of Opp, Alabama.
Baxley took his '65 Chevelle station wagon to a win over the '64 Chevy II of
J.R. Jackson of Ashville (AL). In the finals, Baxley ran a dead-on 7.298 on
his 7.29 dial at 92.70 miles per hour. Jackson ended the race
on the starting line with a red light foul before running a 7.047 at 97.36
miles per hour on his 7.05 dial-in.
On Sunday (6/11) , "Wild" Willie Winters of Lucedale, Mississippi lived
up to his name with a Pro win over heavy hitter J.P. Hickman of Ellenton,
FL. Winters ran a 5.381 on his 5.38 dial with an .006 light to take the win.
"I knew I would have to really tighten up to beat him," said Winters after
turning in the 7/1000's package. Hickman ran a 4.903 on a 4.89 dial at
135.33 miles per hour in the finals.
The Sunday Footbrake winner came all the way from Ft. Myers, Florida to race
in Montgomery . Tom Booher raced an 1988 Mazda RX-7 with a Chevy small
block engine to a win over always tough Adam Davis of Cullman, AL. Booher dialed
a 6.70 in the finals and ran a 6.677 at 102.06 with an .028 light. Davis had
dialed a 6.86 but his '77 Vega skied to a 6.836 at 95.96 mph for the
breakout loss. |
